No longer is it anticipated that every lawyer or firm has a high-rise static office in an area near their local courthouse. More and more, we are finding that lawyers work from their homes, in flex rentals, and in drop-in spaces in jurisdictions where they may be temporarily trying a case. No matter what your circumstance, here are some tips for choosing office space rentals.

Tip 1: Ascertain the Size of the Space You Need

Give some thought to the immediate and future needs of your office space. In doing so, consider:

  • Are you working alone or with other attorneys who will also need private space?
  • Will you have a staff, including interns, administrators, secretaries, or volunteers?
  • Will you need a room for large meetings, arbitrations, negotiations, etc.?

These basic considerations will help you decide one of the most important things: the size and layout of your potential office.

At Mesilla Legal Center, we offer a range of different office spaces to suit your needs. From two-person meetings to multi-party depositions in a complex legal matter, we can accommodate.

Tip 2: Determine the Length of Time You Will Need the Office Space

With the growth of remote work, even a lawyer may choose to work from home or find another non-traditional legal office space. Be sure you evaluate whether you need:

  • Drop-in office space that can be reserved for hours, days, or up to two weeks at a time;
  • Short-term traditional rental space beyond two weeks.

At Mesilla Legal Center, we offer you the flexibility to rent office space for the amount of time you need it up to two weeks. Requests for space beyond two weeks require a phone consultation. Please call (575) 56-6917 to inquire into renting a space beyond two weeks.

Tip 3: Pin Down Your Budget for Rent

What is a reasonable rental rate for office space? Well, office space rental costs vary greatly. We strongly advise that you determine how much you can afford and are willing to spend on office space. As you do so, don’t forget to find out and factor in costs for things like utilities and insurance.

At Mesilla Legal Center, the flexibility we offer is unmatched. Because you can rent a space for a very specific amount of time, from hours, to days, to weeks, you no longer need to worry about those traditional rented spaces, which often require you to book for a minimum amount of time, often a full day, which translates to higher costs.

Tip 4: Decide Where You Need to Be Geographically

It is important to be in a geographic location that is convenient for you. So consider these things regarding the location of your office accommodations:

  • Where (what area of town) do you want to be based?
  • Is the location convenient for court, if you will be making regular court appearances?
  • Is the location accessible for your client base (i.e. do you need to be near public transit options, have ample parking, etc.)?

If looking for space out of town, you would likely be best served by using temporary space.

At Mesilla Legal Center, you will be conveniently located to the Third Judicial District Courthouse (10 minutes away), downtown (10 minutes away), and all the beautiful restaurants and wineries of Las Cruces and neighboring Mesilla.

Tip 5: Compare Spaces

This tip is a crucial one. Don’t jump on the first location you find. Take the time to:

  • Ask around,
  • Explore,
  • Compare, and
